What Are Fire Doors?

Fire doors are being increasingly used as fire engineering measures in the built environment to counter the threat of fire and to improve fire safety for people, premises, and buildings. Fire doors are installed not only in fire-resisting buildings, but also in other types of buildings where a high standard of fire protection is required.

A normal door usually provides room segregation, sound insulation and/or security against intruders rather than retaining fire, smoke, and heat.
A fire door, when a fire actually breaks out, it is important to make sure that the fire door is securely closed or locked!
And that brings us to the topic at hand...

The purpose of a fire door
Officially, a fire door is defined as a door that can maintain the integrity of its seal throughout a fire event, thus isolating the fire from adjoining rooms.

How to identify a fire door
All fire doors can be clearly recognised by looking the appropriate fire door signage, this is usually a blue sign with white writing reading ‘fire door keep shut’, 'fire door keep locked' or 'automatic fire door keep clear'.
Fire doors can also be identified from their hinges, closing mechanism, intumescent seals, and gaps.
The gaps around the tops and sides of the door should be less than 4mm.
The seal must be heat-sensitive, intumescent, preventing the spread of fire and smoke by swelling when warmed – consequently sealing the gap between door and frame.
Hinges should be fire rated/graded.
The door should close itself fully on to its stops by use of a closing mechanism from any open position.
